Kuala Lumpur, 24 August 2009 – Kuwait Finance House (Malaysia) Berhad (KFHMB) commemorated Malaysia’s upcoming 52nd Merdeka celebration by cultivating 52 trees of various local species in Putrajaya. A tree-planting ceremony was held on 21 August 2009, at Taman Monumen Alaf Baru, Putrajaya, to signify KFHMB’s efforts in contributing to the environment. The ceremony was attended by Tuan Haji Mohammad bin A. Shukor, Director, Department of Landscape and Parks, Putrajaya Corporation, as well as Encik Ab Jabar Ab Rahman, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, KFHMB.
The project is one of KFHMB’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, with the aim to contribute to nature by adding greeneries and shady areas to the city. It has been running successfully for three consecutive years, with a total of 50 and 51 trees planted in Putrajaya, for the previous two Merdeka celebrations respectively. This year, a native of the Pteleocarpa lamponga (Tembusu tikus) species was planted at the park as a symbolic gesture to the project. Subsequently, an additional of 51 indigenous varieties will be planted progressively along Persiaran Timur, Putrajaya.
At the ceremony, Encik Ab Jabar expressed his sincere appreciation to Putrajaya Corporation by saying, “We are thankful to be granted the opportunity again this year and hope that this tradition will continue in the future. Islam has taught us that every living organism was created for a purpose. Humans as caliphs of the earth are entrusted to look after and protect the environment. As a responsible Islamic bank, it is KFHMB’s duty to contribute towards this noble cause.” On a similar effort, KFHMB has also rolled out its School Landscaping Project since 2008, with the aim of improving the environment within schools. To date, eight schools outside Kuala Lumpur from the states of Selangor, Perak and Pahang had benefitted from the initiative. “This programme is unique and meaningful to us, as it involves the participation from all employees including their families. Voluntarily, they participated and contributed their energy and resources in upgrading the schools’ garden and recreational areas. These areas in turn, can be utilised by the students to conduct activities, or outdoor lessons with their teachers,” added Encik Ab Jabar.
KFHMB, which has just celebrated its fourth anniversary earlier this month, views the effort of preserving the environment very seriously. The main focus of this initiative not only encourages participation from all levels within the organisation, but also aims to set an example for the corporate sector and the public to replicate. On that note Encik Ab Jabar concluded, “The act of planting a tree has a substantial significance in every culture and society, therefore, be it as individuals, groups or corporate, collective participation such as this could be one of the solutions to the current environmental crisis. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), under its ‘Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign’, targets the planting of seven billion trees by the end of 2009. We are very pleased that our CSR initiative concurrently supports this noble cause.”
