Kuala Lumpur, 17 March 2011 - Yayasan Sejahtera, the foundation established to help with hard-core poverty, today received a RM1 million donation from Kuwait Finance House (Malaysia) Berhad (KFHMB) in a ceremony held at Mercu UEM, Kuala Lumpur.
The donation will be channelled towards creating sustainable livelihood for vulnerable communities adopted by Yayasan Sejahtera in Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak.
"We gladly welcome KFHMB as our partner in our efforts to address hardcore poverty problems throughout the country," said Datuk Seri Utama Shahrir Samad, Chairman of Yayasan Sejahtera.
Partners in the Sejahtera programme span the government and corporations, including government linked investment companies, government linked companies (GLC), government agencies, academic institutions and non-government organisations (NGO).
KFHMB's Chief Executive Officer, Jamelah Jamaluddin said, "KFHMB's participation in the Sejahtera programme marks another milestone in our on-going corporate responsibility involvement where we provide assistance to those in need, following the footsteps of our parent company as a caring corporate citizen. Through the presence of our branches nationwide, we are able to effectively contribute to these community-based initiatives and play a major role in enhancing the lives of people in these areas."
The Bank has, over the past five years, been undertaking various initiatives involving underprivileged communities, school landscaping and medical assistance, with the involvement of its staff.
While Sejahtera has created programmes specific to each of these communities, one commonality is the formation of farm clusters to provide food for survival and a sustainable source of income for the community. For example in Sarawak, immediate cash crop has been identified for the Penans of Lusong Laku, and in Bachok, the planting of watermelons.
Shahrir added that the RM1million will be spent to further develop farm cluster programmes in Kelantan along with other initiatives to increase income in Sabah and Sarawak.
Yayasan Sejahtera was created under the auspices of the Putrajaya Committee on GLC High Performance to eradicate poverty in Malaysia.
The Sejahtera programme under the foundation seeks to help vulnerable communities create a better life for themselves by providing the necessary tools, skills and infrastructure.
Since its inception in September 2009, the foundation has successfully reached out to the vulnerable communities in Bachok, Baling and Maran in the peninsular with farming and rehabilitation projects.
In addition to that, Yayasan Sejahtera has also launched the water solution projects for the vulnerable communities in Pulau Bruit and a food pantry initiative in Lusong Laku, Sarawak.
Sejahtera's programmes are usually carried out for a one or two-year period, often with the involvement of private sector companies as partners or leaders.
As part of the foundation's effort to raise funds for its various projects, it welcomed donations from the public through the www.sejahtera.my.
